The trading cards covered topics from nature to sports. Fast forward to the 1930s and the Goudey Chewing Gum Company began placing baseball cards in packs of gum. Then in the 1950s Topps Chewing Gum, Inc. began inserting promotional trading cards into their packs. Topps would produce their first baseball card set in 1951, these resembled playing cards. In 1952 Topps baseball cards would get a redesign that resembles the trading cards we know and love today, with player pictures on the front and statistics on the back. Since then several companies such as Panini, Upper Deck, Fleer, Wizards of the Coast, The Pokémon Company began producing trading cards of all kinds. In modern sports cards, the licenses for producing trading cards and stickers for major sports leagues are limited. Topps baseball holds the official license for the MLB. Panini football and Panini basketball hold the license for the NFL and NBA, and Upper Deck holds the license for the NHL. In the late 1980s card grading was introduced and grading services such as PSA and BGS began entering the scene to help create scarcity in an era that saw severe over-printing of several sports trading cards. Today sets such as Panini Prizm, Donruss Optic, Panini Mosaic, Topps Chrome, and Upper Deck Flagship dominate the hobby in their respective sports.
